Missed the deadline for this year’s Call for Volunteers? Drop us a line and we’ll put you on the mailing list for next year’s application. Don’t forget to check out the presenters line up and consider joining us while tickets are still available.
Volunteers will work closely with the MWUX committee during the conference to make sure everything runs smoothly for both attendees and presenters. You might be asked to:
- Manage wayfinding, signage, and direct traffic
- Assist with offsite excursions, workshops, social events
- Set up/tear down catering and vendor booths
- Maintain conference cleanliness
- Set up, move, organize, & restock food, supplies, etc.
- Hand out swag, umbrellas, etc.
- Answer questions about the conference, Chicago, schedule, etc.
- Generally assist presenters, attendees, MWUX committee
We encourage people of all backgrounds, career levels, locations, and mobilities to apply to be a volunteer at MWUX.
With so much opportunity to connect with the presenters, vendors, fellow volunteers, and attendees, your LinkedIn is gonna blow up. You’ll also get some conference swag, free breakfast & lunch, and all the coffee you could drink. We can’t promise you’ll see everything, but we’ll work hard to make sure you get a chance to see your top presenters.
Do I have to live in Chicago to volunteer?
Nope! But volunteers will need to arrange their own travel accommodations and be onsite during their scheduled dates/times as well as orientation. We can recommend many low-cost accommodations, if needed.
Where should I be?
The Athenaeum Theater in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood will be our conference headquarters. Our secondary venue, Schubas, is less than a 10 minute walk away.
Workshops, excursions, and social events are TBD, but many will be near the Loop.

When should I be available?
We’ll need volunteers from October 11–13, with shifts starting at 7am and ending around 9pm. This includes workshops, excursions, and social events as well as the conference itself (October 12–13). Please note your availability in your application.
In addition to October 12–13, all conference volunteers must be available in-person for one of the orientation sessions that will be held before the conference.
I can’t take time off of work. Can I still lend a hand?
Of course! Just let us know when you’re available in your application. The conference includes workshops, excursions, and social events, not to mention setting up in the days/weeks beforehand.
Do I get a free ticket? (Conference Volunteers only)
Technically, yes, but you won’t see most of the program. We’ll be working hard (and fighting FOMO) right along with you. Don’t forget, conference videos will be available online after the conference is over.
Why do I have to apply?
As a smaller conference, we have a happy problem of having more interest than spots to fill. Gathering information through an application process allows us to build a volunteer team that is small, but mighty.
What if I don’t have any event experience?
That’s no problem! There’s lots of different experiences and skills that you can apply to running a successful event such as working in a restaurant or in customer service.
What if I’ve volunteered for MWUX in the past?
Hello, again! We love the continued interest in MWUX and encourage you to apply to volunteer in Chicago. While, we can’t guarantee you a spot, we will definitely take your prior experience into account.
I can’t be on my feet for long periods of time. Can I still volunteer?
Of course! There’s a lot to do before, during, and after the conference—trust us. Please note that in your application, and we’ll plan accordingly.
