The Athenaeum Theatre

This year, Lakeview’s Athenaeum Theatre will be the conference’s home base, helping to bring people out of the loop and into the neighborhoods, taking a fresh look at this historic, diverse city.

The community-focused mission of the Athenaeum Theatre is a perfect fit for MWUX. When the structure first opened in 1911, the Athenaeum provided parishioners with meeting rooms, a library, a gymnasium, and even a bowling alley. Throughout its lifetime it served the community as a girls high school, a temporary church, and now holds a food pantry, a gymnasium, and administrative spaces for 14 not for profit groups.

In addition to the five theatre companies who currently call the Athenaeum home, the theatre has seen an expanding list of impressive performances: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, comedian Marc Maron, Ballet Chicago’s Nutcracker, YouTube sensation Lilly Singh, and artist Laura Marling.

We’re still confirming the locations of additional venues. Stay tuned for updates!

The Lakeview neighborhood

Lakeview, a lakeshore adjacent Chicago neighborhood a few miles north of downtown, is the perfect home base for our conference.

Lakeview is known for its variety. It overlaps with Chicago’s LGBTQ district, Wrigleyville, and our park district. It boasts 12 theatre spaces, 11 music venues, vegan restaurants, a brewery, a drag bar, karaoke, an arcade, and plenty of coffee.
